Workspace Woes

Man, I am having a tough time working on my comic. I don't know how people manage a full time job and do comics. I think part of my problem is my crummy workspace. It's just so uncomfortable. My current set up is so frankensteined that some space is totally wasted and empty while other space is overcrowded. It's uneven, unsturdy, and unkempt. Clevergretchen and I are moving into a new rent house soon and I have a chance to remedy the situation. I'm thinking of a small but deep corner desk to accomodate my monitor/keyboard/wacom paired up with a drafting table. Also, my drafting table is an old crappy one that I cut a big hole in and put a piece of plexiglass over to use as a light table. It's a crappy rig, so I need to figure out a better drafting table/light table combo... or should I have 2 seperate drawing tables (one plain drafting, one light table)?

Hopefully I can figure something out that won't cost an arm and a leg. Suggestions are welcome.

I'm tired of my desk lamps making me sweat like a maniac when I'm drawing and cranking down the A/C, so I've ordered an LED bulb from ThinkGeek to remedy the situation. Apparently they're less hot, use less energy, and last longer. I'm not sure that the quality of the light will be that great though.
I'm leaving for work this morning and swing by my tank to feed the fish. There were 2 russian guys wearing only towels hanging out in my aquarium. "Come, Pavel! Join us for sauna!" I glance at the thermometer and it's 10 degrees higher than it should be. The heater broke and stayed ON. Luckily my fish are still alive.

So, I go to Petco at lunch to exchange my heater. Surprize! All the other heaters are $17 more than the one I got. When I expressed my hypothesis that the previous heater was made cheaply and that's probably the reason it broke, the Petco dude cited that probably wasn't the case and that it was cheaper because that heater didn't have numbers printed on the dial. WHAT?! Printing numbers on plastic does not cost $17. I'm tired of Petco employees not being able to admit that they don't know absolutely everything about everything in the store. I would appreciate an "I don't know" every once in a while.

The new heater is kinda ugly, but less phallic.

And remember, blogs are stupid.

So here I am at 2:00AM scanning in old comic strips that have been missing from my website for over 4 years. Wow this is some humble pie. I really thought I was hot shit back then. It got me curious, and I dug up the first 80 comic strips I did. Hoooweee! These are some stinkers!!!! Anyway, I'll be posting all of this stuff very soon on my site for anyone who gives a damn. You can laugh at my feeble attempts at sequential humor, poor draftsmanship, and non-existent scanning skills.

Man, I love ToyJoy on 29th and Guadalupe. Always something cool in there.
I picked up a Sunshine Buddy a month or two ago. They're very simple but very cool. Basically put them in some light and their heads sway back and forth. Quite soothing. Apparently there's a beach flavor available in Japan that makes... beach noises and a similar toy called flip flap.

The other day I also saw a cool figurine collection called Scarygirl Mini Treehouse. They're nifty and well crafted. Unfortunately you don't get to choose the figure you want, it's a surprize when you open the box. I guess that saves you from collector geeks that snatch up all the rare/cool ones immediately, but still an inconvenience.

Lastly there's Aquapets. Logic tells me that these toys are nothing but fancy paperweights, but I keep fighting the urge to fork over $15 for one. It's a little pokemon-like animal sealed in a water-filled tube. You press a button on the base and the animal swims up and down and chitters some noise. Kinda cool. It'd be interesting if you could "feed" them or something like a tamagotchi.

The verdict: LAME. I got it based on a snippet I saw of it on Cartoon Network back in February. I now understand why it hasn't survived on CN. The dubs and dialogue are horrible. I thought the character design was interesting and I only paid like $10 for the disc so I don't feel ripped off. If I'd paid the $39.95 it retails for I would be pissed.

Here I thought The Gimp was a purely Linux/Unix thang. Nope. They've built it for windows too. Those of you looking for an inexpensive (read free) alternative to photoshop here it is (GIMP FOR WINDOWS). Make sure you read the FAQ for install instructions. I'm just now giving it a whirl, no telling how nicely it performs, but if it's anything like the version I use on my UNIX machine, it should be quite useful. Finally, I can use something other than MS Paint on my work PC without having to worry about trial copy expiration!
